WHEN Maba Jaffar picked up the paint brushes about 10 years ago, her husband and children had no clue that she could paint.
A decade on, it proved that she had made a good choice quitting her job to raise her four children because it also allowed her to revive her passion for painting.
“At school, my teachers always showed my drawings to the class but I did not have the chance to pursue painting when I started working in the IT industry,” she said.
It took Maba 18 years later to finally have the opportunity to paint again.
Her first solo exhibition, featuring 15 pieces of landscape work on canvas, is running now at the Executive Lounge, Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside Hotel until April 15.

The 52-year-old said she started with simple watercolours during her free time at home, and slowly expanded to other medium.
She began with still objects such as cucumber and banana blossom, and progressed to wildlife and landscape.
Upon Malaysia Visual Art Association’s suggestion, she took up the challenge to have her own exhibition.
Beautiful scenery captured in different parts of the country are recorded on the canvas in different sizes, some are from lovely moments engraved in her memory.
Maba said she would always throw in elements from her imagination to convey a stronger message.
Her favourite piece is “An Egret Invasion” in which she painted the Malaysian mangrove in all its glory, and drew a flock of egrets frolicking in its midst.
“The scene is preserved in this painting to remind us of the precious species that we may have overlooked and often sacrificed in the name of progress,” she said.
While the self-taught artist is yet to try out painting on location, she is amazed by the dazzling sights the country can offer.
“In spite of rapid development, there are still many places in this country that can take our breath away, if we care enough to observe and appreciate them.

“Many are popular, but many more are simply there within our reaches waiting to be discovered and embraced. Tranquillity is when the mind is resting and the heart is expanding,” she added.
Also present at the launch of the exhibition were National Visual Arts Development Board chairman Datuk Mahadzir Lokman, Malaysia Visual Art Association’s chairman Aris Aziz and Pullman Putrajaya general manager Christophe Keramaris.
This is the fourth art exhibition hosted by the hotel which is located at No 2, Jalan P5/5, Precinct 5, Putrajaya. For details, call 03-8890 0000.
